Avatar: The Best Film of 2009
It’s not that people aren’t allowed to have differing opinions – it’s that I’m right and anyone who disagrees with me is wrong.
Avatar is one of the best films I have ever seen. But it’s more than just a film – with sights, sounds and explosions – it’s a true movie experience. And this is why I refuse to acknowledge negative reviews – no matter what the source.
Sure, the plot isn’t breaking new ground – I’ll give them that. In many ways it mirrors Dances With Wolves, but that shouldn’t be a detractor. By all accounts, Dances With Wolves is a pretty solid film. Also, I think getting caught up in the similarities is a real injustice to the work itself. I find it’s far more related to the concept of having a ‘second life’ and losing yourself in fantasy & dreams. To have a new life that you engineer with faults corrected, with a community that accepts you… or to be in a perfect dream and to wake up wishing you were back in that dream. James Cameron did a masterful job of bringing these feelings through to the audience – via the compelling story and slick presentation. Leaving the theatre was a painful process. A step back into the cold realities of real life. That ‘feeling’ is what makes this film so great.
For those who didn’t care for the film – I have to imagine they just missed this entirely… too caught up in the techporn, blue people, and so on. I’m sure they came in half expecting to see Jar Jar Binks or some equally awful CGI creations.
Adding to the solid story and vision, the flawless presentation brings the film to a whole new level. Watching it in IMAX 3D, I felt like I was seeing the first colour motion picture. It’s truly an evolution – the next step in filmmaking. In 20 years I’m going to remember watching Avatar and absorbing this new film experience for the first time.
EDIT: On second thought, I will accept the following as faults in Avatar – 1) Anything to do with Michelle Rodriguez 2) the name “unobtanium”
Iman: Being a Top Model was “Pure Hell”
In an interview I did for E!, supermodel Iman admits she has “self-esteem issues.” Still gorgeous and poised, the 54-year-old wife of David Bowie and host of Project Runway Canada talks about her life in the spotlight. Also – just below, is another video from the interview where Iman talks about Canadian designers and how they stack up to Americans.
OH-SO-COCO
Heading out to interview Coco Rocha tonight. I haven’t really spent any serious time with her since her charity fashion show in the summer (uhh, the one in exciting Barry, Ontario). Ran into her a few times over TIFF, but nothing much to speak of -looking forward to catching up with one of my favourite models! See below for a Coco segment I wrote for ET Canada.
Captain Kirk or Captain Ahab?
A little William Shatner story I threw together for my show “Secrets of the Stars.” A lot of people think Shatner is a bit on the loony side. I happen to think he’s quite interesting and otherworldly.
Hilary Duff Feuds With PETA?
Part of my interview with Hilary Duff. In this portion, Hilary talks about her love/hate relationship with PETA and her boyfriend, Mike Comrie.
Shopping With Addison Gill
Watch out Coco Rocha! Having just celebrated her birthday yesterday, seventeen-year-old Addison Gill is one of this country’s fastest rising models. Having already walked for Valentino, Luis Vuitton and Calvin Klein, she knows a thing or two about the fashion world. But, believe it or not, until I took her shopping she didn’t own a real pair of sunglasses. This summer I took her to Gafas on Queen St. in downtown Toronto. Just another fun moment from E! News Weekend, watch the video for our exclusive shopping session with Addison.
Also, check out a gallery of pics from the day – much thanks to PM Rendon for these great photos.
Happy Birthday
Drake Is Deep
Drake is a true genius. A wordsmith, you might say. Only a few years ago, he was a clean-cut kid from the burbs – and now? He’s holding “that shit down.” Recently he filled out a questionnaire for XXL magazine’s December/January 2010 issue. I thought I would take a moment to share some of the wisdom Drake has accumulated in his many productive years on this planet.
- While Lil Wayne is gone I will… hold that shit down.
- The one thing I miss about Toronto, compared to anywhere else, is… feeling so far away from my dreams.
- TV groupies are different from hip-hop groupies because… they don’t exist.
- Fuck… bitches, get money.
- My most-prized possession is… your girlfriend’s heart.
